Clipped Wings – Fiction

2nd Place | Clipped Wings

FROM THE DIRECTOR:
A bird falls from the heavens and jumps and bumps his way around in search of a means to regain flight.
The main editing was in Premiere.
After Effects was used for the special effects.
For the Free Wings scene, I wanted to create a surreal environment, much influenced from the ideas of Alice in Wonderland. This was a perfect opportunity to try out The Foundry’s Camera Tracker plugin, allowing the candy city to be created in 3D space.
Used Mocha for motion tracking particularly when there was no means of putting the iPod securely on a tripod. This allowed elements to be removed or added into the scene to lock solid onto the original hand held shot. One scene which was more technical than initially expected was making the bird blink. Using Mocha, Mocha Import and Red Giant Warp the blink was accomplished even when the camera was orbiting the subject.
Trapcode Particular was used to create feather particles on the logo shot and the ‘toilet’ water splash. Trapcode Shine helped give the portals more optical life.
A few of the shots of the bird flying through the air were photo composited after. This was done when either the original bird appeared too small and blurred, to add comic appeal or when the bird’s stunt doubles were used.
